Talking Eminent Domain Issues This Fall

For anyone looking to spend more time on eminent domain issues, there are two upcoming events you may want to consider.

  • For those looking for a one-day commitment, I recommend the IRWA, Chapter 1 2010 Fall Education Seminar, which is taking place on October 26 at the Quiet Cannon in Montebello.  I don't have the full list of speakers yet, but it's always a good event, and my partner, David Graeler, is Chair again this year. I'll be talking about the interrelationship between goodwill and the Relocation Act, using the recent Casasola opinion as a jumping off point (look for a post about that later today).
  • For those looking for two full days of eminent domain excitement, CLE International is holding its 12th Annual Eminent Domain Conference October 28 and 29 at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco.  I'll be speaking the morning of October 28 on a panel discussion of the Guggenheim regulatory takings case, and the entire schedule looks great.

And don't forget, summer's drawing to a close, so your local IRWA chapter is likely about to start its regular meetings again.  I know that Chapter 67 (Orange County) has its meeting on September 14 and Chapter 57 (Inland Empire) has its meeting on September 1.

April to Be a Busy Month for Southern California Eminent Domain Practitioners

If you are an eminent domain attorney, a right-of-way agent, or an appraiser working in Southern California, you will have ample opportunities to expand your horizons (or at least your networking circles) in April.  Here's just a sampling of what's coming up locally:

  • April 13:  IRWA Chapter 67 (Orange County) is holding its monthly lunch meeting.  Orange County Assessor Webster J. Guillory will be speaking.  As usual, the event will be held at the Holiday Inn, Orange County Airport, 2726 South Grand Avenue, Santa Ana, commencing at noon.
  • April 14:  IRWA Chapter 57 (Inland Empire) is holding its monthly lunch meeting.  James M. (Mike) Hart, a licensed land surveyor, will be providing an overview of the structure of bearings.   The meeting will be at the Riverside Convention Center, 3443 Orange Street, Riverside, California.
  •  April 27:  IRWA Chapter 1 is holding its 2010 Valuation Seminar.  This all-day event has a wonderful panel.  And, for those wondering how things are working in the Los Angeles County Superior Court now that Department 59 has been closed, Commissioner Mitchell is a recent addition to the list of speakers.  The seminar is being held at the Quiet Cannon, 901 North Via San Clemente, Montebello.

And, finally, if that isn't all the eminent domain you can handle, IRWA Chapter 67 is holding its 2010 Spring Seminar, Renewable Energy – The Shift of Power on May 11.  I will be speaking on some of the unique issues that can arise in eminent domain when renewable energy projects (or potential highest and best uses) come into play.  More about that as it gets closer.

CLE International Two-Day Eminent Domain Conference in San Francisco

On November 16-17, CLE International is holding one of the biggest eminent domain events of the year, its 11th Annual Conference, Eminent Domain:  Appraisal to Appeal.  The conference is being held at the Stanford Court hotelRegistration is currently open.

Many top eminent domain attorneys and appraisers are scheduled to make presentations.  I am speaking with my partner, Gale Connor, at 3:30 p.m. on November 17.  We will be talking with Norman Hulberg, MAI, about "Preparing Appraiser Trial Testimony."  It should be a great event.
